Each year, during the period of Easter, the inhabitants
of Naples and his surrounding, repeat an old ritual in
the honor of Madonna Dell'Arco. This worship which goes
back to the XV° century, however draws its roots in
the Mediterranean cultures of Antiquity. Hystery, trance,
dance, race indeed recall the worship to Dyonisos and the
Church hardly appreciates this form of extraordinary
devotion.

On Siberut, a small island of the Mentawai archipelago,
just off the coast of Sumatra, time stopped at the
Neolithic stage. In the jungle, some people, lost fare in
the past, still dress with flowers and foliage. They
foster the age-old traditions of harmony, balance and
beauty. This documentary try to penetrate the life of
these people who are still living at the forest's rhythms
and who are still following a spiritual life which is
both complex and surprising.

quantity of salt in magnificent sailing ship. Nowadays
just few of them still remain... These jangollan are
splendidly carved and decorated. The people from Madura
also say that the rigging draw the name of Allah in the
sky...

On Sulawesi(Indonesia), the Toraja organise complex and
sumptuous funeral rites for the dead person. They do not
hesitate to run into debt for many years in order to
obtain the protection of the ancestors and to get more
prestige. Eka, a 12 years old young girl, return in her
village in order to follow the funeral organised for her
grandparents : an occasion for her to discover her own
culture and the difficulties of her parents to pay homage
to their ancestors.

For the Toraja of Sulawesi, the buffalo is more than an
animal because it characterizes the nobility and
richesse.During all its life, the man is his servant. It
never works and the best care is gived to him throughout
its life. Then one day, the man must bury a relative.
That day, the buffalo will be sacrificed among so many
others. In this way, it will pay its debt towards the man
who looked after it with passion.

In the Bugis area of the south
of the island of Sulawesi (Indonesia), the varan
sometimes become a child of the family and it is the case
of Halim. This man have a 12 years old sun and a daughter
who got the apparence of a varan. Unfortunately this
"child-varan" left the house for some time. Halim is
worried so he leaves to meet Ali Mohammad, another varan,
known for its divine capacities. It will attend the
anniversary of this astonishing huge lizard, will receive
its blessing, then will turn over at his place. Its
"chid-varan" will come back to the house a few days
later...

Abdallah live near Marrakech,
in Marocco. He spend most of his live hunting snakes. He
doesn't fear them because he is an Aissaoua, an islamic
brotherhood which maintain very specials ties with these
dangerous animals. When the snakes are too numerous
around the villages, the locals call Abdallah who is very
famous for his skill to catch the snakes by hand. He
never kill the victims that he catch but keep them alive
because the snakes will give him the power to exorcize
the people posessed by bad spirits. Thanks to the snakes,
to the music and above all to the holy words of the
Coran, Abdallah will try to heal people who think to be
possessed during an impressive ritual. Dances and transes
will go on during all the night...
